Dear Members of OMIK:
The Convention is drawing near, and this is a non-election year. The election will be “next year,” we tell ourselves. Yet, by November 1st of this year the candidates for the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer will need to declare by submitting a nomination packet to the Elections Committee. It sort of slips up on anyone casually thinking about running for office!
This year, we will do it slightly differently:
oo Schedule time during the general meeting to allow members to give a 2 to 5 minute nominating speech for a person of their choosing, with or without the approval of the possible candidate, present or otherwise.
oo Allow eligible members, who desire, to make a presentation for themselves.
oo Conduct a straw poll of attendees for the nominated members.
oo Publish results in the Fall Communicator (September).
None of this is official, and has no affect on constitutional procedures. Members desiring to run for office will still have to apply by November 1st.
Yet, these steps will give us a sensing of who are viable candidates, and also tell a candidate that he/she is a player.
I urge all members to give thought to participating in these informal procedures, for the enhancement of OMIK.
Yours truly,
Frank Taylor Smith
President
